Have You Learned the Proper Golf Shot Technique for Trouble Shots?

Fringe golf shots or shots not in the fairway call for golf tips for beginners that are different from the norm due to the high level of skill required Some shots land in places that create downright levels of high tension for our minds like high grass, wooded areas, sand bunkers or areas with high slopes. Most of us drop too much practice time with the driver and thus are not ready for this category of shot due to lack of experience.

One of the best shots a high handicapper can gain knowledge of is the punch shot otherwise known as the knock-down shot. Knock-down shots are good when you are beyond your comfort zone and just need to get the ball back into play with the added bonus of furthering your shot. This shot allows you to hit the ball in a low trajectory to a controlled distance in difficult conditions via a kind of chopping gesture combined with a short swing follow through.

This shot type is really versatile and can be creatively used in many different situations. When hitting the ball using a punch, the goal is to keep the ball low throughout the entire shot. Things to avoid include trees, tree branches, swirling debris, geese – You name it!

Punch shots are easy to use, but don’t be fooled – you will need lots of practice to acquire distance control. Get out on the range and get this done.

To start, bring the club to say, 1/2 to 3/4 of the way back, then play the ball more in the back of the stance. I take 1-2 clubs extra. Keeping the hands ahead of ball is crucial. Think of it as the next step up from a chip/pitch shot.

Got it? Good. Work through the swing keeping the lower body quiet as possible and flow through as low as possible. Don’t move the ball back as far when using a longer club – otherwise the result might look like a long putt. This shot will surprise you with the distance it can generate so be sure to practice.

Finally, before swinging – make your stance narrower, shift weight to forward leg, then take a shorter backswing, swing down on the ball then hold the finish low. A punch is an overall much shorter swing and your arms stay connected to the torso through much of the swing. You will hit down on the ball with this type of shot which will create even more distance if you are not aware of what’s happening.

This is how it works pretty much every time with any iron or hybrid club in the bag. That’s right: Utilizing these beginners golf guide instructions you will look much better in those unplanned for hazardous situations out on the course.  Good Golfing!
